The Certified Athletic Training Intern Program is great for those individuals who have just completed undergraduate or graduate school, and are looking for more experience before obtaining a full-time job. These four positions span one-year or 10-months, and are filled by aspiring athletic trainers from around the country. The primary role of the certified athletic training interns is to assist the full-time staff certified athletic trainers in the overall medical care of student-athletes at Northwestern University.
Each intern will be assigned two sports to provide daily practice and game coverage, evaluations, treatments, and rehabilitation regimens. Additional responsibilities include daily injury reports, record keeping, arranging medical appointments, and presenting monthly in-services to Student Sports Medicine Aides. Certified Athletic Training Interns will also be assigned administrative responsibilities, to be determined by the Director of Athletic Training Services.
Sport assignments for the Certified Athletic Training Interns are as follows: - Football/ Baseball - Cross Country/ Softball - Men's Soccer/ Fencing - Men's & Women's Swimming & Tennis In an effort to provide a quality learning experience for the Certified Athletic Training Intern at Northwestern University, the education program will consist of the following:
1. Weekly meetings with the Intern Coordinator
2. Monthly meetings with an Athletic Training Staff Mentor
3. Observational experiences with summary evaluation:
- Surgical procedures
- Physical Therapy evaluations and rehabilitation
- Orthotic construction
- Shadowing of Physicians in area
- Facility review (Pro sports, high schools, fitness clubs, PT clinics)
- Additional Allied Health Care interviews (chiropractic, massage, sport psychology, nutrition)
4. One multimedia presentation given to staff and associates 5. Exit interview with the Director of Athletic Training Services and applicable certified staff athletic trainer
