MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Northwestern women's cross country team finished 23rd out of 26 teams at the Roy Griak Invitational Saturday afternoon. The race, which featured 13 teams ranked in this week's national Top 30 poll, was run at the University of Minnesota's Les Bolstad Golf Course.

The Wildcats scored 598 points.

No. 20 Arizona State won the meet, scoring 103 points to defeat 15th-ranked Michigan State by 19. Among the other Big Ten schools, No. 22 Penn State was sixth (215 points), No. 13 Michigan was 10th (245), No. 21 Indiana was 15th (413), and host Minnesota was 19th (514).

Junior Diana Hossfeld led the way for Northwestern. The two-time All-District runner scored 71 points Saturday, clocking 22:13 over the 6-kilometer course. Senior Emily Blakeslee was second among the Wildcat runners, scoring 101 points with a time of 22:36.

NU's other scorers were senior Nicole Kalogeropoulos (23:00 for 133 points), freshman Casey Shea (23:05 for 139 points) and senior Nora Colligan (23:31 for 154 points). A total of 12 women ran for the Wildcats.

Kim Smith of Providence won the individual title, running the course in 20:17 to win by 10 seconds over Missy Buttry from Wartburg College.

Northwestern will split its team next weekend to compete in two races. One group will compete at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago, while another group will head out to Oklahoma State for the Cowboy Jamboree. Both races will take place Saturday.
