Head Coach

April Ecke enters her second year as head women’s cross country coach and leader of the resurgence of women’s cross country at Northwestern. Ecke came to Northwestern from the University of Alabama-Birmingham where she was the head men’s and women’s cross country coach as well as the head women’s track and field coach.

From 1995-97, she was the assistant coach for men’s and women’s cross country at the University of Alabama and also was the assistant track and field coach.

As a student at Mississippi State, Ecke was named Southeastern Conference Student-Athlete of the Year in 1995. She made the All-America cross country team in 1993 and was an All-SEC pick in 1992 and 1993. She also holds Mississippi State records in the 3,000 meter outdoor and 5,000 meter indoor and outdoor events. In the classroom, Ecke was named an Academic All-American in 1993, was a four-time Academic All-SEC honoree, and was given the award as the top student-athlete at Mississippi State three straight years.

She graduated magna cum laude from Mississippi State University in 1995 with a B.A. in physical education and elementary education, and in 1997 received her master of arts degree in human performance/teacher education from the University of Alabama.
