ATHENS, Ga. -- 12th-seeded UCLA took the doubles point and the first three singles matches to upset fifth-seeded Northwestern Friday, 4-0. Sophomore Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day) and senior Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) won their No. 1 doubles match over UCLA's 19th-ranked Yasmin Schnack and Riza Zalameda, 9-8 (4).

The Wildcats end their team season with a 23-5 overall record. Rose and freshman Samantha Murray (Altrincham, England/Altrincham Grammar) earned bids in the singles tournament and Rose will team with Prousis to represent the Wildcats in doubles. Both tournaments begin on May 23.

UCLA captured the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. The Wildcats found themselves in early holes on both those courts, but came within one break of evening both matches.

At No. 2, Lauren Lui (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) and Keri Robison (Decatur, Ill./Keystone National) fell to the 53rd-ranked team of Ashley Joelsen and Alex McGoodwin, 8-5. UCLA took two early breaks to go up 5-1, but the Wildcat duo responded with a break of their own to make the score 5-2. From there, the 'Cats could not get another break and the match stayed on serve until the end.

UCLA clinched the first point of the match when 41st-ranked Elizabeth Lumpkin and Stephanie Wentmore downed Alexis Conill (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and Murray, 8-4. The loss snaps the pair's nine-match winning streak.

The Bruins stormed out to a 5-1 lead, but the 'Cats took a game to close 5-2. The teams exchanged breaks for 6-3, but the Wildcats could not pick up the break they needed.

NU's lone win came at No. 1 doubles where ninth-ranked Prousis and Rose took a nail-biter over 19th-ranked Schnack and Zalameda, 9-8 (7-4).

The match stayed on serve until the Wildcats took a break to go up 3-2, but the Bruins took the break right back to even the match at 3-3. The Wildcats went down a break at 4-6, but took it back and held serve to even the match at 6-6. Neither pair could seize a break and the match went to a tiebreak.

UCLA used two mini breaks to take a 3-0 lead, but the Wildcats fought back against the Bruins' serve to close to 3-2.

The 'Cats held and used two more mini breaks to open up a 5-3 lead that they would not relinquish. NU took the tiebreak, 7-4. Nevertheless, UCLA would win at No. 3 doubles and take the first point of the dual.

In singles, the resilient 'Cats came out of the break strong. The Wildcats opened up leads on several courts, but the Bruins quickly caught up and seized momentum.

UCLA grabbed a 2-0 lead with a win at No. 5 singles. Robison fell to McGoodwin, 6-1, 6-2. Just a minute later, Tracy Lin topped Murray at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-2, to give the Bruins a 3-0 lead.

The clincher came at No. 3 where the 56th-ranked Schnack defeated Prousis in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

Sophomore Nazlie Ghazal (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) was up 6-3, 5-3 on Lumpkin at No. 6 singles before her match was abandoned. Lui trailed Joelsen at No. 4, 6-4, 4-3. Rose fell in her first set to Zalameda, 7-5, but led 3-2 in the second when the match was stopped.

The NCAA singles and doubles tournaments begin May 23.
