April 5, 2008
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern made its season debut outdoors at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center on a beautiful afternoon in Evanston. The top-ranked Wildcats continued their domination of the Big Ten on Saturday with a 7-0 sweep over Ohio State and improve to 18-1 in dual play this season. Northwestern now stands atop the Big Ten at 6-0, and dating to 2004, remain unbeaten against conference opponents in its last 56 matches. Northwestern swept the doubles point and took an early 1-0 match advantage over the Buckeyes. Lauren Lui (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) and Samantha Murray (Altrincham, England/Altrincham Grammar) teamed up together for the first time since February in an 8-1 victory at No. 1. Nazlie Ghazal (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) and Maria Mosolova (Moscow, Russia/No. 204) also played together for the first time in over a month, but looked sharp in their 8-2 win at No. 2. The duo improves to 16-2 overall in doubles play this season. The 'Cats ensured the sweep of doubles when Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day) and Alexis Conill (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) were victors at No. 3. Despite the Wildcats' early 7-1 match advantage, Ohio State fought valiantly to make a comeback, but ultimately fell to the 'Cats duo, 8-5. Rose and Conill have also validated themselves as a successful tandem, as they improve to 10-1 overall this season.
Northwestern took a 2-0 match lead after Mosolova's dominating victory at No. 1. Coming out strong from the get-go and never looking back, Mosolova downed her opponent in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Samantha Murray earned her 15th dual win of the season and gave the Wildcats a 3-0 advantage with her 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3.
The 'Cats took a 4-0 lead and clinched the match after Georgia Rose was victorious at No. 2. Rose was dominant in the first set with a 6-0 sweep, but despite a good effort from Ohio State, a confident Rose proved too much for her competitor and took the second set 6-3. Nazlie Ghazal won her 7th-consecutive and 15th overall dual victory of the season after her 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5. With the 'Cats leading 5-0, Lauren Lui maintained an impressive streak of her own with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4. Lui is currently on a 12-match winning streak, has won 22-consecutive matches from No. 4 and boasts an impressive 15-0 dual record from the same position this season. Northwestern took a 7-0 advantage and ensured the sweep over Ohio State with Keri Robison's win at No. 6 (Decatur, Ill./Keystone National). After a long first set, Robison fell 6-7, but her efforts earned her a 6-3 win in the second set, forcing a tiebreaker set. Robison dominated her opponent 10-1 in the tiebreaker, earning the victory and her first dual win of the season. Northwestern returns to action at 11 a.m. Sunday, April 6, when it hosts No. 28 Indiana. The weather forecast indicates the 'Cats will enjoy another outdoor match at Vandy Christie Tennis Center, but will move indoors to the Combe Tennis Center in the event of inclement weather.
