Wildcats' Winning Streak Reaches Ten With 7-0 Victory Over Purdue
March 29, 2008 WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Top-ranked Northwestern won its 10th-consecutive dual match on Saturday with a 7-0 victory at Purdue. The Wildcats improve to 16-1 on the season and remain unblemished at 4-0 atop the Big Ten. The 'Cats dominated in a sweep of the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead for the day. At No. 3, Alexis Conill (Fort Laurderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and Maria Mosolova (Moscow, Russia/No. 204) showed no mercy in their 8-1 victory. Northwestern followed suit at No. 1 and No. 2, winning each match 8-3 and securing the doubles point. At No. 6 singles, Suzie Matzenauer (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine) rebounded after losing her last two matches this week. Matzenauer improved to 15-2 at No. 6 this season and gave the Wildcats a 2-0 match lead after quickly defeating her opponent, 6-2, 6-2. Northwestern took a 3-0 lead when fifth-ranked Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day) completed a 6-1, 6-1 romp at No. 2. Rose now stands at 10-1 in dual play from the No. 2 position this season. After going up 4-0, the Wildcats clinched the match when third-ranked Mosolova defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1. She improves to 26-4 overall this season. The Wildcats continued their dominating play, going up 5-0 with Nazlie Ghazal's (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5. One of the more exciting matches of the day took place at No. 3, where Samantha Murray (Altrincham, England/Altrincham Grammar) took a 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (5) win, giving the 'Cats a 6-0 lead for the day.
At No. 4, Lauren Lui extended her winning streak and improved to 13-0 in duals from that position with her 6-0, 7-6 defeat of Purdue's Joanna Craven. Her victory clinched the sweep and gave the Wildcats a 7-0 victory for the match.
Northwestern continues its road trip and returns to action at noon Sunday, March 30, to face 70th-ranked Illinois. The Wildcats own the all-time series lead over the Fighting Illini, 37-7. Singles 1.
