No. 16 NU Kicks off Three-match Weekend with Sweep of Notre Dame
Jan. 30, 2003
EVANSTON - What is usually a grueling match between regional rivals turned out to be an easy win for the Northwestern women's tennis team (3-2) Thursday afternoon at the Combe Tennis Center. The 'Cats handed No. 21 Notre Dame (2-1) its first loss of the season with a 7-0 win. The Wildcats got the match started by sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. The Irish came close to winning at No. 3, but Kristi Roemer and Jamie Peisel rallied back to win in a tiebreaker, 8-7(5), and give NU the sweep. The Wildcats were straight-set victors from top to bottom in singles play. Freshman Cristelle Grier upped her win streak to five with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Alicia Salas. Andrea Yung also kept her perfect record with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Kristina Stastney at No. 3. The Wildcats will play the second of three matches this weekend on Friday when they host No. 59 Furman. Match time is set for 4 p.m. at the Combe Tennis Center. The 'Cats will take on fifth-ranked North Carolina on Sunday at noon to close out the homestand.
