COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Senior Andrea Hupman (Lawrenceville, Ga./Brookwood) earned a spot in the championship final of the 200 free Friday at the NCAA Championships, giving Northwestern its second first-team All-American in as many days. With the addition of a 10th-place finish by the 800 free relay, the Wildcats currently are in 19th place entering the final day of the meet. Northwestern has 40 points in the meet, two behind Wisconsin and USC, which are tied for 17th place. Arizona State is two points behind NU in 20th place. Hupman qualified in sixth place for the championship heat in the 200 free with a time of 1:45.07 during the prelims, guaranteeing herself the first first-team All-America honor of her career and her seventh All-America accolade overall. Hupman then came in eighth during the championship final with a time of a 1:50.60. In the 800 free relay, which does not feature preliminary heats, Northwestern smoked its old school record by nearly five full seconds to finish 10th overall with a 7:08.52. Freshman Ellen Grigg (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin School), sophomore Emily Wong (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's), Hupman and sophomore Kassia Shishkoff (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School) comprised the relay for the Wildcats. All four Wildcats earned honorable mention All-America accolades with the swim. The time smashed the previous school mark of 7:13.50 the squad achieved at the Big Ten Championships. Hupman now has four All-America accolades at the 2008 NCAA Championships after earning honorable mention nods in the 50 free and 200 free relay on Thursday. Grigg has two All-America nods, while Wong also has a pair of honors now. Shishkoff opened the preliminaries Friday morning for Northwestern with a time of 4:16.59 in the 400 IM, coming in 28th overall in the event. In the morning heats of the 100 fly, senior Katie Braun (Edina, Minn./Edina) turned in a career-best effort, breaking her own school record with a time of 53.51, but she came in 23rd overall to miss the evening swims. During the prelims of the 200 free, Grigg cut nearly two full seconds off her collegiate-best time to come in 22nd overall with a 1:46.82. Grigg continued her fantastic meet with the swim, which came a day after she dropped more than two seconds off her previous career-best in the 500 free to make the championship heat in that event. Freshman Liza Engstrom (Reno, Nev./Robert McQueen) came in 38th overall in the 100 back with a prelim swim of 55.37.
