COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Sophomore Ellen Grigg (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin School) broke her own school record in the 500 free during Thursday morning preliminary action at the NCAA Championships, placing her 17th and just one spot away from earning her second-straight All-America honor in the event.
Grigg swam a 4:41.10 to shatter her school mark of 4:41.82 set last season when she finished eighth in the nation to earn first-team All-America accolades. Underscoring the speed new suit technology has brought to the sport, Grigg's 2009 effort was .72 of a second faster than her swim in 2008, but it left her a minuscule .04 of a second and one place away from winning a spot in the consolation final Thursday night.
The top 16 places in each event score points for their respective teams. The top eight in an event are named first-team All-America while the remaining eight are considered honorable mention All-Americans.
Grigg's time was the third-best among Big Ten entries and placed her in the top third of the 64 competitors in the 500 free field after entering the meet as the 34th seed in the event. She returns to action at the Big Ten Championships Friday morning in the preliminaries of the 200 freestyle.
