EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) and sophomore Tammy Williams (Roscoe, Mo./Osceola) have been named finalists for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year honor, announced today by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA). The 25-player list of finalists was chosen from a watch list of 50 players announced during the preseason, and also took into consideration players not on the watch list who have stood out this year. From the 25 finalists, a list of top-10 finalists will be announced just before the start of the postseason, then from there three finalists will be chosen to travel to the Women's College World Series for the Player of the Year announcement. The top 25 is comprised of players representing 17 schools and six different NCAA Division I conferences. The list consists of 12 seniors, seven juniors, five sophomores and a red-shirt freshman. Northwestern is one of seven schools with multiple finalists on the list. Cooper currently leads the Big Ten with 14 home runs and 45 RBIs, already having tied the Northwestern single-season record for four-baggers. Her 14 home runs are tied with Oklahoma's Samantha Ricketts for the most out of the POY finalists. Cooper is second on NU's team with a .400 batting average. Leading Northwestern in batting average is Williams, whose .500 clip makes her one of just five finalists batting .500 or better. Her 50 runs scored on the season are second on the finalists list only to Norrelle Dickson of Oklahoma (53), although Williams' per game average of 1.43 runs eclipses Dickson's 1.26 mark. Williams also leads NU with 59 hits, nine doubles and a .542 on-base percentage. Cooper and Williams joined teammate Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) on the 50-person watch list at the beginning of the season.
