Susie McCreery Earns Verizon Academic All-District
Jan. 11, 2002 EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern women's soccer goalkeeper Susie McCreery (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) was named to the Verizon Academic All-District V Women's Soccer Team. The announcement was made Friday morning by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
McCreery was one of 11 women named to the team, and now goes on the ballot for the Verizon Academic All-America Women's Soccer Team which will be voted on next month.
McCreery, a senior, started every match this season and played all but 19 minutes. In fact, her 1,726 minutes was fifth on NU's single-season list. She boasted a 1.04 goals-against average, good for second on NU's single-season list, and collected four shutouts (1 shared), fifth on NU's single-season list. McCreery's best play came during the latter part of the season, as she put together a shutout streak of 373:36, second-longest in NU history (from Oct. 21 to Nov. 8), and she allowed more than one goal on just three occasions, all to nationally ranked opponents: St. Mary's (3) on Sept. 8, Michigan (2) on Sept. 28, and Penn State (3) on Nov. 8.
Although she is a senior academically, McCreery redshirted the 2000 season and thus can come back to play again next year for the Wildcats.
This is the first year Verizon has sponsored an Academic All-America Team in men's and women's soccer. Previously, they had been placed in their respective gender's fall/winter at-large teams. Verizon also sponsors Academic All-America Teams in football, women's volleyball, men's and women's basketball, baseball and softball.
