Wildcats Fall in OT at Colorado College, 3-2
Nov. 3, 2002
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Freshman midfielder Alex West scored on a cross from Stevie Kernan in the second overtime, giving Colorado College a 3-2 victory over Northwestern in women's soccer action. The match was the season finale for the Wildcats, who finished 4-9-5 overall and 2-6-2 in the Big Ten. Colorado College improved to 8-7-1 overall. This match was the sixth that went to overtime this season for Northwestern -- the other five ended as ties. Colorado College opened the scoring early in the match, when Kernan tipped a shot past Wildcat keeper Susie McCreery (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) in the 14th minute. Ashley Hooverson returned an inbounds pass from Rebecca Carroll, who moved into position to the left of the goal before taking a shot along the ground. Kernan redirected it just enough to elude McCreery. Northwestern rebounded in the second period with a pair of goals from Molly Greene (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Julie Lipinski (Tinley Park, Ill./Marian Catholic). Greene headed home the Wilcats' first goal just 3:49 into the second half off a corner kick by Aileen Guiney (Naperville, Ill./North). Guiney's assist was her ninth this season, which allows her to finish the season alone in second place for assists in a single campaign. Lipinski's rebound tally gave Northwestern the lead 2-1 at 64:07 mark. The Tigers refused to give up, however, as Hooverson netted her first goal of the year off a cross by West to knot the game up at 2-2. That provided the Tigers with the momentum that carried them to the win in the second overtime. McCreery ended her college career with a five-save performance in the NU goal, while Meghann Loseke had nine stops to get the win for the Tigers.
