Box Score

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's streak of 388:44 of shutout soccer came to an end Friday afternoon as the Wildcats fell to the Minnesota Golden Gophers at Lakeside Field, 1-0. Goalkeeper Lauren Johnston (Denver, Colo./Denver East) made five saves -- several on shots from point-blank range.

With the loss, Northwestern falls to 7-6-4, 2-4-2 in the Big Ten. Minnesota improves to 8-7-1, 4-4-0 in conference.

Northwestern put pressure on the Gophers early as Shannon Schneeman (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall), Kelsey Hans (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) and Jenny Dunn (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Louisville) launched shots at Minnesota's net and forced one save. Minnesota put on the heat late in the half, forcing a Johnston save in the 38th minute.

The first half ended scoreless, but NU maintained the advantage in shots and shots on goal. They took eight shots and forced three saves by the Minnesota keeper.

NU again pressured in the early stages of the second frame with Schneeman and Dunn taking early shots and forcing a save. Johnston made two second-half saves and received a fortunate bounce from NU's FieldTurf that caused a ball to bounce over the cross bar before Minnesota got on the board at 70:40.

Minnesota's Lindsey Schwartz gave Minnesota the 1-0 lead on what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

NU could not mount an attack in the closing minutes and fell to the Gophers at the Lakeside Field, 1-0.

For the game, Northwestern took 12 shots. Schneeman led the way with five shots and one on goal. Dunn took three shots and Johnston made five saves in net.

The Wildcats return to action at noon Sunday against Iowa. The game will be televised on delay basis by the Big Ten Network and will shown at 7 p.m. CT Monday evening.

Locks of Love Day
Northwestern women's soccer will hold Locks of Love Day during its home game against Iowa at noon Sunday, October 28 at Lakeside Field. For months, head coach Stephanie Erickson and several Wildcats have been growing out their hair and they will be getting their hair cut after the game in support of Locks of Love.

Locks of Love is a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long term medical hair loss.

Schedule Note: The Wildcats' final home game, November 2 against Wisconsin, will be played at 7 p.m. Friday night.
