Box Score

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Freshman Jennifer Baumann (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) scored her first career goal to give Northwestern a 1-0 lead in the second half, but 11th-ranked Penn State scored three unanswered goals to defeat the Wildcats Sunday, 3-1. Northwestern held the lead for close to 15 minutes before the Nittany Lions made their charge.

The loss drops Northwestern to 6-5-1 on the year, 1-3 in the Big Ten. No. 11 Penn State improves to 8-2-1, 3-0 in the Big Ten.

"We have had a rough start to Big Ten season," head coach Stephanie Erickson said. "I am pleased with how we are improving each week and need to continue getting better as conference season rolls on."

Penn State put pressure on the NU defense early and often in the first half, but the back line and senior goalkeeper Lauren Johnston (Denver, Colo./Denver East) were up to the task. Johnston made all three of her saves in the opening frame as Penn State fired off a total of 10 first-half shots. The Lions also forced three corners.

Johnston again owned her goal box as she did against Ohio State, making several sliding saves close to the edge of the box. One of those slides saved what would have been a certain goal on a one-on-one chance by Penn State.

The Wildcats settled for a scoreless tie heading into halftime, but similar to Friday's game, the 'Cats came out firing to start the second half.

Northwestern attacked the Penn State goal and after a crowd developed near the net, the ball squirted out to the foot of Baumann, who took one touch to settle the ball to her foot and then fired shot into the top right corner of the net for her first career goal at 48:49.

NU maintained their 1-0 lead until the 62nd minute when Aubrey Aden-Buie scored her first of two goals on the afternoon to tie the score at 1-1. Aden-Buie gave Penn State the lead on her game-winner at 73:58 and the Nittany Lions added one more goal in the 82nd minute to take the 3-1 win.

Junior Jenny Dunn (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Louisville) led NU with three shots and senior Kelsey Hans (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) forced two saves by the Penn State keeper.

NU's next three games will be on the road as they next face Illinois at 7 p.m. Friday. They will take one more road trip after that before finishing the regular season at Lakeside Field.
