Hans Nets Lone Wildcat Goal; NU Plays Penn to 1-1 Tie

EVANSTON, Ill -- Kelsey Hans (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) put the 'Cats ahead 1-0 in the first half with her 31st career goal, but the Wildcats played the Penn Quakers to a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of soccer Friday afternoon at the Lakeside Field under blustery autumn-like conditions. NU hosts Colgate at 1:15 p.m. Sunday afternoon. With the tie, Northwestern's record moves to 4-1-1 while Penn stands at 3-1-1. It did not take long for Northwestern to find out how ferocious the winds at the new Lakeside Field can be as blustery winds plagued the entire 110 minutes of soccer. The Wildcats had the wind at their backs in the first half and came out firing. NU racked up seven shots in the opening frame and put pressure on with two corners. NU broke through in the 24th minute when sophomore defender Katherine Sampson (San Francisco, Calif./Drew School) placed a perfect serve into the box from the back line. Freshman Sam Greene (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica) took a touch and dished to Hans who put it away for her third goal of the season and an NU record 31st of her career. Sampson and Greene both have two assists on the season. For Greene, she notched her third point of her freshman campaign. Although NU took a 1-0 lead into the locker room, they had to play the second half against the wind. The disadvantage showed itself quickly as Penn put in the equalizer at 45:55 -- less than a minute into the second frame. NU controlled play for most of the second half despite playing with the wind in its face. The 'Cats took another seven shots in the second half and forced the Quaker keeper to make five second-half saves.
Regulation ended with the score 1-1 and the teams started the first of two overtimes. The first overtime passed with neither team able to score the golden goal and take the match. After the teams switched ends of the field, NU played the second overtime into the wind.
The 'Cats had one shot on goal in the second overtime and goalkeeper Lauren Johnston (Denver, Colo./Denver East) was forced to make one save. "I was very proud of how we played today," head coach Stephanie Erickson said. "I thought we were able to hold the momentum of the game even when we faced difficult and windy conditions." Hans led the 'Cats' offensive attack with five shots and three on goal. Freshman Jennifer Baumann (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) had three shots and junior Jenny Dunn (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Louisville) notched a shot on goal in overtime. Northwestern racked up seven corner kicks to one for Penn and the Wildcats out shot the Quakers, 16-9 with 10 of the 16 shots landing on goal. NU returns to action at 1:15 p.m. Sunday against Colgate. |
