Baumann's Header Gives NU 1-0 Win Over Illinois State
Sept. 1, 2008
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Sophomore Jennifer Baumann's header goal in the 32nd minute gave NU a 1-0 win over the Illinois State Redbirds in the second day of the Lakeside Invitational Monday afternoon. Senior Jenny Dunn served up a corner kick for Baumann who put it home for the game's lone goal. With the win, Northwestern improves to 2-1-0 on the year and finishes the Lakeside Invitational with a 1-1 mark. Carolyn Edwards picked up the win in goal. NU controlled play for most of the contest, recording three shots and a pair of corner kicks against the wind in the first half. Freshmen Nicole Duller and Emily Langston had NU's best chances before the goal by forcing a pair of saves. Dunn took the first of what would be two corner kicks and the ball ended up out of bounds setting the senior up for another. This time, the Wildcat put a perfect serve into the box that was headed home by Baumann at 31:41. Edwards made a late first-half save, but the first frame ended with the 'Cats holding a 1-0 advantage. The Wildcats kept the pressure up in the second half as Alicia Herczeg fired a shot wide, Baumann fired one high and Dunn forced a Redbird save. The Redbirds picked up the pressure late, but Edwards made a save in the 86th minute and NU held on for the victory. The Wildcats took nine shots on the afternoon with Langston leading the way with three shots on goal. Seven of NU's nine shots were on frame and the 'Cats took five corners. Edwards made two saves to pick up her second victory.
The Wildcats return to action at the Pepperdine Nike Challenge in Malibu, Calif., beginning Friday. The 'Cats will face San Diego -- an NCAA tournament team from last year -- on Friday at 3 p.m. CT before taking on host Pepperdine at 3 p.m. CT Sunday.
