'Cats Return to the Desert at Mountain View Collegiate

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Three weeks after posting an eighth-place finish at the Duramed Collegiate Invitational at Rio Verde, Ariz., Northwestern returns to the Valley of the Sun to compete in the 11th annual Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz. on March 28 and 29. The Wildcats have traditionally fared well in the 54-hole tournament, capturing the team title in 2005 while finishing second in 2007 and third in 2006. Hosted by the University of Colorado, the tournament will be held at the par-72, 6,263 yard Mountain View Golf Course. 36 holes will be played on Saturday, March 28, with the final 18 taking place on Sunday, March 29. Each round will begin with a shotgun start, beginning at 9 a.m. Central both days. Northwestern is one of 18 teams competing in what looks to be a challenging field. Six teams are ranked in the top-50 in this week's Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, including San Jose State (No. 19), Louisville (No. 20), UNLV (No. 32), the host Buffaloes (No. 38), Michigan (No. 48) and Texas Tech (No. 49). Indiana (No. 60) will be the third Big Ten team competing this weekend, with Boise State (No. 136), Colorado State (No. 67), Fresno State (No. 78), Iowa State (No. 73), Kansas State (No. 120), Missouri (No. 65), Nebraska (No. 64), Oklahoma (No. 61), Oregon State (No. 62) and Washington State (No. 68) rounding out the field.
The Wildcats are coming off an eighth-place finish at the Duramed Collegiate Inviational on March 8, the sixth top-10 finish of the season for head coach Emily Fletcher's young squad. Sophomore Kelsey Lindenschmidt (West Chester, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) is coming off her season-best 18th-place finish at the Duramed, and continues to lead the team with a 77.71 scoring average and a pair of top-20 finishes. Sophomore Innapha Tantanavivat (Bangkok, Thailand/David Leadbetter Academy) is right behind with a 78.24 scoring average, and senior Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy) is at 78.72. Hong shot a career-best 69 in the second round of the 2006 Mountain View Collegiate, which is tied for the second-best individual round in the tournament's history.
