BRYAN, Texas -- Northwestern, seeded 16th in the 21-team NCAA Central Regional Championships, is off to a strong start after shooting a 20-over 308 Thursday on Texas A&M's demanding Traditions Golf Course.

Led by junior Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood), the Wildcats sit in sixth place, two strokes back of Michigan State, and one stroke in front of Ohio State and Kent State. The top eight finishing teams after Saturday's third and final round will advance to the NCAA National Championships in Columbus, Ohio, later this month.

USC and Duke, two of the nation's top five teams, broke the 300-stroke mark on the A&M course, which is considered one of the most difficult in the college golf ranks. USC, the nation's sixth-ranked team shot a 5-over 293, while Duke, the nation's top-ranked team and defending national champ, fired a 6-over 294.

Kim, who is coming off her first-place showing at the Big Ten Championships, was among the region leaders all day. She was a stroke off the lead until her final hole when she double-bogeyed the par-3 No. 9. Kim is 1-over (73) for the tourney and three strokes behind Texas' Devan Andersen and Duke's Amanda Blumenherst, the nation's No. 1-ranked golfer. Kim is in seventh place.

Freshman Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy) carded a 3-over 75 and is in 18th place. Sophomore Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) is 45th with a 7-over 79. Junior Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) is 61st at 9-over (81) while sophomore Katie Trachok (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) is 77th at 11-over (83).
