NORMAL, Ill. -- Northwestern's women's golf team came up eight strokes short of finishing in the top eight of the NCAA Central Regional and settled for an 11th-place finish at Illinois State's University Golf Course. The top eight teams advance to the NCAA National Championships May 18-21 in Opelika, Ala.

The Wildcats, seeded 17th in the 21-team tournament, began Saturday's final round in a three-way tie for seventh place. NU, however, finished with a 32-over 316, its worst round of the three days, and finished 82-over (313-305-316=934). Vanderbilt, the top seed in the tournament, posted a 4-over 288 -- the best single-round team score of the tournament -- and pulled away to win the Central Regional title by nine strokes over second-place Arizona. Big Ten schools Michigan State and Purdue, finished third and sixth, respectively, and will join Ohio State, which finished sixth at the West Regional, at the NCAA National Championships.

"We couldn't duplicate what we did on Saturday, and that was the difference," said head coach Chris Regenberg. "The good news for us is that this entire lineup is back next year. Despite our disappointment, our team gained a lot from this weekend's NCAA experience."

Junior Ina Kim (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake), who began the day in 10th place, finished 17th overall, her best finish of the season. She shot a 16-over 229 (77-74-78).

Freshman Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood), the 2004 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, shot a 6-over 77 on Saturday and finished 40th with a 21-over 234 (81-76-77). Classmate Kelly Robb (Concord, Mass./Middlesex School), fell from 20th to 49th with an 11-over 82 on Saturday. She finished 23-over (76-78-82=236).

Junior Mary Ellen Grzebien (Saunderstown, R.I./Narragansett) finished 72nd (80-77-83=240) at 27-over. Freshman Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), placed 78th at 29-over (80-83-79=242).
