NORMAL, Ill. -- Windy weather has made the first two days of the NCAA Central Regional Championships trickier than most teams wanted, but on Friday, Northwestern's women's golf team handled the adverse conditions much better than it did on Thursday. As a result, the Wildcats are in the hunt for one of the eight NCAA national berths up for grabs.

Northwestern did so well on Friday -- it posted the fourth-best team score (21-over 305) of the day -- that it jumped seven spots in the team standings, from 14th to seventh place (50-over, 313-305=618). The Wildcats, who are seeded 17th in the 21-team tournament, are tied with SMU and New Mexico. Illinois State, the host school, lurks three strokes behind NU, SMU and New Mexico in 10th place. Vanderbilt, the top seed in the Regional and the SEC champion, fired a 25-over 307 for the second round and is tied for first place at 37-over.

"We did a great job handling the wind today," said NU head coach Chris Regenberg. "If we show up on Saturday, we have an excellent chance to accomplish our goal, which is get to nationals. We're going into Saturday's round pretty confident."

Three of the schools in the top seven are from the Big Ten: Michigan State is a co-leader with Vandy (37-over), Purdue is in sixth place (46-over), and the Wildcats in seventh. Indiana, the fourth Big Ten team in the Regional, is tied for 14th place at 63-over.

Junior Ina Kim (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake), whose best finish of the season (21st place) came two weeks ago at the Big Ten Championships, is in 10th place at 9-over (77-74=151). Her 3-over 74 on Friday led NU's five golfers.

Freshman Kelly Robb (Concord, Mass./Middlesex School) is in 20th place at 12-over. She followed up Thursday's 76 with a 78 today.

Junior Mary Ellen Grzebien (Saunderstown, R.I./Narragansett) and freshman Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) are both in 44th place at 15-over (157). Grzebien shot a 77 on Friday while Kim answered with a 76.

NU's third freshman, Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), is 84th at 21-over (80-83=163).
