'Cats Claw Their Way Into Third After Day One at Big Ten Championships
April 27, 2007
LANSING, Mich. -- Northwestern's women's golf team, which is ranked 33rd in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Index, fought the elements and a difficult course on day one of the Big Ten Championships and finds itself in third place with half of the tournament in the books. The conditions on day one of the championships were far from ideal, with a wind chill below 40 accompanied by 15-20 mph winds. The 'Cats proved up to the challenge, grinding out a 36-hole total of 44-over 620 (313-307). Northwestern is two shots clear of fourth-place Ohio State and trails second-place Purdue by only three shots. Host Michigan State leads the championships after day one at 24-over 600. As has been the case throughout the year, the senior duo of Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) and Liliana Alvarez (Durango, Mexico/American School of Durango) led the charge for the 'Cats. After an opening-round 78 placed her just outside the top 10, Kim responded with a 1-over 73 in the second round -- the second-best score for the round -- to shoot up the leaderboard into fourth place halfway through the tournament. The defending Big Ten medalist finds herself only four shots out of second place with 36 holes remaining. Tied with Kim for 11th after both shot 78's in the opening round, Alvarez shot another 6-over 78 in the second round to maintain her position on the leaderboard. The senior is on pace for her eighth top-15 finish in nine events as a Wildcat.
Sophomore Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy) and senior Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) also put together a pair of solid rounds for the 'Cats on day one. Hong followed up an opening-round 82 with the Wildcats' second-best score for round two, a 5-over 77, and is tied for 24th.
One of the players Hong is tied with is Scholten, who shot an opening-round 80 and second-round 79 to match Hong's 36-hole total. Like her fellow seniors Kim and Alvarez, both of Scholten's rounds counted toward the team score. Northwestern's fourth score for the first round came from junior Katie Trachok (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair). Trachok actually led the 'Cats in round one, firing a 5-over 77. She is currently in a tie for 31st at 16-over 160 (77-83). Also participating for the 'Cats was Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), who sits in 59th place after two rounds. The third round of the Big Ten Championships begins at 8:30 a.m. CT Saturday, with the final round starting at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.
