![]() Welcome to Northwestern University and the 2004 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament! We are proud to host this event on the brand new turf field at our beautiful Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex on our lakefront campus. This weekend's tournament is the culmination of a season of training, learning and competing for each student-athlete who steps on the field representing her university and team. We are excited that this year's championship game will be broadcast on College Sports TV as well.
GAME RECAPS No. 2 Iowa 3, No. 7 Northwestern 2 (OT) Candice Cooper opened the match for Northwestern with a pair of goals to stake the Wildcats to a 2-0 lead, but Iowa stormed back to tie it before half -- getting the match-tying goal on a Lauren Stiver penalty stroke. Neither team would score in the second half, but Caroline Blaum found the back of the cage for Iowa with just 28 seconds left in the first overtime period to give the Hawkeyes the win. CHAMPIONSHIP No. 1 Michigan 3, No. 2 Iowa 2 Just like the schools' first meeting, Michigan held a lead with 20 minutes to play. And just like the last time -- when Iowa scored three goals to send the match to overtime and eventually defeat UM -- the Hawkeyes made a comeback. This time, however, it would fall just short. Debbie Birrell staked Iowa to a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute, but Michigan would reel off three consecutive goals from Katie Morris, Mary Fox and Jessica Blake to take a 3-1 lead with 18:14 to play. Iowa's Tammy Leister cut the lead to 3-2 in the 56th minute, but that is as close as the Hawkeyes would get.
