Ann Arbor, Mich. -- Northwestern left it all on the field but at the end of 70 minutes of play, sixth-ranked Penn State prevailed, 2-0, in the opening round of the 2006 Big Ten Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich. The 'Cats complete the season with a 7-12, 1-5 record.

Amidst snow flurries and unseasonably cold temperatures, both squads took some time to adjust to the elements. Most of the opening half action was spent down at Penn State's side of the field, but the Wildcat defense held the Nittany Lions' attack at bay.

Northwestern's first opportunity to score came at the 7:00 mark of the first half off a corner shot by Christina Foley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth). Foley's shot was blocked and a follow-up attempt by Alexandra Quinn (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) was batted down by Mallory Weisen.

NU had one other opportunity to score when Elizabeth Dobbs (Wellesley, Mass./St. Ignatius (Calif.)) took a shot on goal with two minutes left in the half.

After a scoreless first half, both teams came out looking to score. The Nittany Lions responded at the 44:21 mark when Britney Long connected with Kiersten Wood for the first score of the match.

Penn State scored again less than four minutes later, at 47:06, off a direct corner to inflate the lead to 2-0.

Penn State outshot the Wildcats, 12-5 and took four more penalty corners than NU.
