ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill.-- Late tech fall victories by Mike Tamillow and Dustin Fox weren't enough for the Wildcats as No. 21 Indiana edged No. 10 Northwestern, 24-14, Sunday at Rolling Meadows High School.

The loss drops Northwestern to 8-9 on the season, finishing 3-5 in the Big Ten. Indiana improves to 13-8, 2-6 in conference.

The dual began at 125 lbs. with the marquee match of the day, featuring No. 5 Brandon Precin against No. 3 Angel Escobedo. Precin defended nicely against the Hoosiers' constant advances as the first period ended without a point.

Escobedo's escape to start the second gave IU the early 1-0 lead. The wrestlers continued to size each other up, with both staying on their feet for the remainder of the period. Entering the third down 1-0, Precin tied the match with a quick escape of his own. As the match intensified and the time wound down, each wrestler shot but could not manage a point as the match went into overtime.

In the match's one-minute sudden victory round, Escobedo was able to score a takedown with one second remaining to give the Hoosiers a 3-1 victory and a 3-0 dual lead.

At 133 lbs., Eric Metzler came out firing, but IU's No. 12 Andrae Hernandez subsided the wave and scored a takedown for the 2-0 lead, a lead that would hold through the remainder of the match. Hernandez scored a reversal and a takedown to take the match 7-1, extending Indiana's lead to 6-0.

Wrestling in place of No. 14 Keith Sulzer at 141 lbs. for Northwestern was James Kohlberg against Scott Kelly. Kohlberg returned to his home gym looking to impress the familiar crowd. Going into the third period tied 1-1, Kelly managed a takedown that Kohlberg couldn't answer. Kelly's 4-1 victory gave IU a 9-0 dual lead.

No. 11 Ryan Lang looked to end the IU winning streak at 149 lbs. against Kurt Kisner with a takedown in the first. Kisner's escape cut the Wildcat lead in half, however, making the score 2-1 at the end of one. Kisner then tied the score with another escape at the start of the second, but Lang scored another takedown, doubling his lead to 4-2 going into the third.

After Kisner gave up the escape to begin the third, Lang scored another takedown. In order to score the major decision, Lang gave up the escape, but couldn't find the last takedown as he won 8-3, putting the Wildcats on the board 9-3.

Andrew Nadhir had another tough match this week at 157 lbs., this time against No. 4 Brandon Becker. Nadhir scored a quick takedown in the first, but Becker proved to be too much for Nadhir to handle as he gained the pin at 6:08 to give Indiana a commanding 15-3 dual lead.

At 165 lbs., Dominic Marella traded shot attempts with No. 14 Matt Coughlin. Coughlin's late takedown gave IU the 2-0 lead after one period. Coughlin added an escape to take a 3-0 lead into the final period. Marella answered with an escape in the third, and despite numerous attempts, the Wildcat could not find the tying takedown, giving IU the 3-1 victory and extending the Indiana lead to 15 at 18-3.

The 174 lb. match featured No. 12 Nick Hayes against Paul Young. Young scored a quick takedown, but Hayes' escape was swift. Hayes scored a takedown of his own, but this time there would be no escape as the Wildcat took a 3-2 lead into the second period.

An escape gave Hayes the only point of the second period, and then two more takedowns in the third gave Hayes the 8-4 lead. Hayes kept the pressure on, but no more takedowns were to come as Hayes added the riding point for a 9-4 victory that cut the IU lead to 18-6.

Adil Kolovic went up against Marc Bennett at 184 lbs. Both wrestlers struggled for position through the most of the first, until Bennett was able to get Kolovic down where he couldn't escape, amassing the pin at the 2:57 mark and giving IU a commanding 24-6 lead.

No. 2 Mike Tamillow was wrestling for pride against Joe Fagiano at 197 lbs. Tamillow scored three takedowns in the first period alone for an early 6-2 lead. Another two takedowns and a point for stalling gave Tamillow an 11-4 lead entering the final period.

Tamillow's takedown tally was six in the third period and eleven for the match as the Wildcat scored the 25-9 technical fall victory to make the score 24-10.

No. 1 Dustin Fox started the heavyweight contest against John Sandberg just where Tamillow left off. Fox scored six takedowns in the first two periods to give the heavyweight a 14-4 lead. Fox continued to control Sandberg in the third as the Wildcat scored a 24-8 victory for his 100th career victory. Indiana came out on top, however, with the 24-14 dual win.
