'Cats Halted by Hawkeyes
Jan. 17, 2004
IOWA CITY, Iowa--Today was not the day for head coach Tim Cysewski and Northwestern's wrestling team. Seeking to break a 34-match losing streak to Iowa, the Wildcats instead fell 39-4 to the Hawkeyes, who have just 10 losses in the last 21 years at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Also, Cysewski was unable to pick up his 100th career win. "Iowa is a great team, especially at home," said Cysewski. "I am confident we can re-group and bounce back from this loss." The one bright spot for NU (8-2, 0-1 Big Ten) was freshman Nick Hayes (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central), who had an 11-3 major decision over Mark Mueller at 165 lbs. to prevent the shutout. That win cut the Iowa (6-2, 1-0) lead to 6-4, but it was all-Hawkeyes from there. John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) was unable to avenge his Midlands loss to Luke Eustice at 125 lbs. due to an injury default at 4:31. His loss gave Iowa a 27-4 lead. The Wildcats return home to play host to three matches this weekend--Purdue at 7 p.m. Friday, Indiana at 2 p.m. Saturday and Missouri Baptist at 4 p.m. Saturday. All three events will be held at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Iowa 39, Northwestern 4
157 -- Joe Johnston (I) pinned Mike Kimberlin (NU), 3:42; 6-0
