Big Ten Conference Selects Jake Herbert as Jesse Owens Award Winner

Northwestern senior Jake Herbert, a two-time NCAA champion and this year's Hodge Trophy winner as college wrestling's most dominant performer, has been named the 2009 recipient of the prestigious Jesse Owens Athlete of the Year Award as the top male athlete across all sports in the Big Ten Conference. Herbert is NU's second Jesse Owens honoree--following golfer Luke Donald in 1999--since the award's inception in 1982.

Northwestern Adds Three to 2009-10 Recruiting Class

Northwestern head coach Tim Cysewski, entering his 20th season at the helm of NU's wrestling program, has announced the addition of three more freshmen recruits in his incoming class. Kevin Bialka (Lockport, Ill./Lockport), Jeff Olsen (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and Terrance Scotton (Willingboro, N.J./Burlington) are set to join the Wildcats squad next fall.

Northwestern Garners NWCA All-Academic Team Recognition

Following a season in which it finished 13th in the nation as a team while becoming the only program to win an NCAA individual championship each of the last three years, Northwestern was recognized Thursday by the National Wrestling Coaches Association for its outstanding achievement in the classroom. NU's team GPA of 3.161 ranks seventh among all NCAA wrestling programs, seven spots ahead of the second-best Big Ten program.

Herbert Earns One of Seven Spots on U.S. Senior World Team

Former Wildcat Jake Herbert competed as the top seed in the 84-kg weight class in the 2009 World Team Trials Sunday in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and came away successful in his attempt to qualify for his first U.S. World Team. Herbert defeated former Bloomsburg wrestler Bryce Hasseman in a three-match series, punching himself a ticket to Denmark to battle the globe's best at the 2009 World Championships Sept. 21-27.

Welch Receives AWN All-Rookie Team Selection

Amateur Wrestling News released its all-rookie team in its May issue and selected Northwestern freshman Jason Welch (Walnut Creek, Calif./Las Lomas) as the year's top newcomer in the 157-pound weight class. Welch finished his freshman season with a 26-10 record and placed second in his first trip to the Big Ten Championships.

2008-09 Season Recap: Good Things Come in Threes for NU

Northwestern has recently grown accustomed to bringing home its share of hardware and the 2008-09 campaign was no different. Senior Jake Herbert cemented his place on the Big Ten's list of most accomplished wrestlers by winning the 2009 Hodge Trophy as the sport's top performer after winning his second NCAA crown. Herbert's title at 184 pounds left Northwestern as the only school in the country to have had an NCAA individual champion in each of the past three seasons.

Five Wildcat Programs Recognized by NCAA for Top APR

Today (April 22), five Northwestern teams are being honored by the NCAA with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores, covering the time period between 2004-08. Teams honored for being in the top 10 percent were: men's soccer, men's tennis, women's golf, women's volleyball and wrestling.

Northwestern became the center of the college wrestling world Saturday when NU held its annual end-of-the-season banquet at the Wildfire Glenview. W.I.N. Magazine was on hand to present NU senior Jake Herbert his 2009 Hodge Trophy as well as freshman Jason Welch with his 2008 Junior Hodge Trophy, marking the first time since the awards' inceptions that both have gone to members of the same college team.

Herbert Captures U.S. Nationals Freestyle Championship

In his first competition since winning his second NCAA title on March 21, Hodge Trophy winner Jake Herbert bested the field in the 185-pound (84 kg) weight division at the U.S. Nationals meet in Las Vegas on Saturday. Forty-One Wildcats Earn Academic All-Big Ten Award

Precin Avenges Losses, Brings Home Third Place From NCAAs

For Northwestern junior Brandon Precin, a third-place finish in the wrestlebacks of the 2009 NCAA Championships in St. Louis required beating two opponents against whom Precin had previously gone a combined 0-8 in his career. But the two-time All-American wasn't fazed, hammering out wins over Indiana's Angel Escobedo and Arizona State's Anthony Robles to capture third place at 125 pounds.
