Northwestern Drops Road Contest To No. 34 Penn State, 7-0
March 2, 2008 UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Northwestern captured a tight No. 1 doubles match, but No. 34 Penn State took the doubles point and swept singles en route to a 7-0 win over the Wildcats on Sunday. Marc Dwyer and Alex Sanborn won their doubles match, 8-6. With the loss, Northwestern falls to 6-7 overall, 0-2 in the Big Ten. The Nittany Lions took a 1-0 lead by capturing the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. At No. 2, Brendan Lynch and Michael James topped Alexander Thams and Peter Rispoli, 8-5. Dwyer and Sanborn evened the doubles portion with an 8-6 win at No. 1 over Adam Slagter and Eddie Bourchier, 8-6. Penn State took doubles and a 1-0 lead with a win at No. 3. Ryan Gormley and Guillaume St-Maurice defeated David Seyferth and Juan Gomez in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (0). Penn State won all six singles matches, but NU put up battles on almost every court, forcing the match time to extend to close to five hours. At No. 1, James defeated Dwyer in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. The Nittany Lions took a 3-0 lead with a victory at No. 2 where Sanborn fell in a first-set tiebreaker and then 6-3 in the second set to Lynch. The clincher came at No. 3 where Thams was outlasted by Bourchier, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Rispoli cruised to an easy first-set win at No. 4, but fell in three sets to Gormley, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. After Seyferth fell in a tightly-contested two-setter at No. 6, 6-3, 6-3, the dual ended at No. 5 where Gomez fell to James Dwyer in a match tiebreaker after the first two sets went to tiebreakers, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (3), 1-0 (5). Northwestern hosts Vanderbilt at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Combe Tennis Center.
