EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern swimmer Tony Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) has been named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, announced by the conference today.

Swanson, a freshman All-American last year, led the Wildcats to a 188-162 win over Big Ten foe Iowa in a two-day dual this weekend. He did it all-won four events, set pool records, hit NCAA "B" standard times and swam leadoff for three winning relay squads:

* Placed first in four individual events: 100 free (45.43), 200 free (1:39.55), 200 back (1:47.24) and 200 IM (1:48.62)
* Swam the first leg for three winning relay teams: 200 free (1:22.91), 400 free (3:03.30) and 400 medley (3:19.28). The 200 medley team took second (1:31.47).
* Set NU season top times in the 50 free (20.98RL), 200 free, 100 back (48.86RL), 200 back and 200 IM
* Recorded NCAA "B" standard times in the 50 free, 100 back, 200 back and 200 IM
* Set Iowa Fieldhouse Pool records in the 100 back (previous: 49.24) and the 200 IM (previous: 1:50.47). The 200 IM record had stood since 1986.

Head coach Bob Groseth was pleased with Swanson's performance at Iowa. "I'm excited about how Tony and the rest of the team did. Tony's times at Iowa set him up well for the Big Tens and eventually the NCAAs."

This is Swanson's first Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honor this season and the second of his career. Teammate Kellan O'Connor (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy Prep) received the award on Jan. 21.
