EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern remains in second place following the second day of action at the TYR Invitational at the Norris Aquatics Center, swimming multiple NCAA `B' provisional qualifying times.

Michigan State leads the six-team competition with 608 points while Northwestern has 494. Michigan's split squad is third with 327.5, followed by Cleveland State (324) in fourth, Kenyon College (311.5) in fifth and Illinois-Chicago (304) in sixth.

Northwestern opened Saturday night's finals session with a victory in the 200 medley relay, getting a 1:31.01 to defeat Michigan State's time of 1:31.02. The Wildcats' team of Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves), Nathan Butler (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin), Brian Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) and Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) trailed entering the final 50-yard free leg, but Mathews tracked down the Spartan with a 20.05 final split to his opponent's 20.45.

Freshman Charlie Rimkus (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) picked up the first NCAA `B' provisional qualifying time of his career with a win in the 400 IM, going 3:53.30 to narrowly out-touch his teammate Tyler's `B' cut time of 3:53.39. Rimkus trailed heavily entering the freestyle portion of the event, but swam splits of 26.92 and 25.53 to top Tyler's 28.18 and 26.97.

Peter Park (Princeton, N.J./Peddie School) was fourth with a 4:01.24 and Tony Mattar (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) took eighth in the championship heat of the 400 IM for the Wildcats.

Mathews made it two event wins in a row for Northwestern with a 49.16 in the 100 fly. He was joined in the `A' final of the event by Bryan Pinkston (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's), who placed sixth with a 50.08. Chris Doman (Pittsburgh, Pa./St. Charles Prep (Columbus, Ohio)) took 10th overall and Kerr was 13th after each swam in the consolation final.

John Frutiger (Alma, Mich./Alma) was NU's lone competitor in the championship heat of the 200 free, taking fourth with a 1:41.74. Jan Hanulik (Cavisov, Czech Republic/Sportovni Gymnazium) won the consolation final in 1:41.29, a time that would have placed him fourth in the `A' race. Rimkus was right behind Hanulik in 10th place overall.

Tyler's 56.62 in the 100 breast placed him fifth overall while Butler was eighth with a 58.02 as NU's lone scorers in that event. Mathews then took eighth in the 100 back while Varun Shivakumar (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd) scored points with a 10th place overall finish in the event.

In diving action, Kalister Harmon (Olympia, Wash./Capital) took third on the 3-meter springboard with a score of 286.35.

NU's 800 free relay team of Tyler, Frutiger, Rimkus and Mathews swam and NCAA `B' cut of 6:41.48, but placed second behind Michigan State's squad.
