COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Northwestern won four conference titles during Friday's opening day of the Big Ten Championships at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, and currently sits in fourth place in the team standings.
The Wildcats have 168 points, four points behind third-place Michigan and five points behind second-place Minnesota. Host Ohio State leads the meet with 186 points. NU leads fifth-place Indiana by 37 points.
Northwestern began the finals in grand style, shattering the pool, school and Big Ten records to win the conference title in the 200 free relay with an NCAA `A' time of 1:17.21. Junior Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North), senior Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), junior Bruno Barbic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gymnazija) and senior Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) comprised the relay.
In the prelims of the 500 free, sophomore Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) finished second with a personal best NCAA `B' provisional qualifying cut time of 4:19.20. Junior Daniel Walls (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino) earned a spot in the consolation final with a 15th-place time of 4:26.14, which also is a `B' cut effort.
Nilsson ended up fourth in the finals, swimming a 4:21.48. Walls moved up to 13th with a 4:25.39 in the consolation heat.
Sophomore Andy Long (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) also competed in the event, turning in a season-best 4:34.01 to end up in 43rd place.
In the 200 IM preliminary heats, Alexandrov broke the pool record with an NCAA `A' automatic qualification standard swim of 1:45.92 to take first. Sophomore Adam Beckman (Kearney, Neb./Kearney) earned a place in the consolation finals with a personal-best NCAA `B' time of 1:48.30 to take 13th.
In the finals, Alexandrov rocked out a 1:45.11 to break the pool record and come just .02 seconds away from his own school record to win the Big Ten title. The time was an NCAA `A' standard. Beckman went a 1:49.41 in the consolation final to take 14th.
Freshman Jake Vogel (Canton, Ill./Canton) was 25th overall, just missing the evening's bonus final with a season-best 1:51.22. Also swimming the 200 IM for the 'Cats were Alex Hostoffer (Cleveland, Ohio/Gilmour Academy), who took 41st with a season-best 1:52.81, and Adam Lewno (Racine, Wis./J.I. Case), who was 49th with a season-best 1:54.54.
In the 50 free prelims, the transfer Barbic exploded onto scene at his first Big Ten Championships, breaking the pool record with a lifetime-best and NCAA `A' cut of 19.40 to win the preliminary heats. Teammate and three-time defending Big Ten champion in the event Grevers was third in the prelims with a season-best `B' cut of 19.71.
The two swimmers flopped places in the final, with Grevers winning his fourth-consecutive 50 free Big Ten title in an `A' time of 19.53. Barbic was third with a 19.75.
Junior Jon Ehret (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) took 31st in the event with a season-best 20.76, while Jimmy Sourbeer (Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) had a 21.27 to take 50th. Also swimming the event for the 'Cats were Eric Simpson (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley), Bryan Pinkston (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) and Alec Hayden (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier).
In diving, sophomore Alex Kiaie (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) ended up 11th on the 1-meter board with a score of 285.70, and junior Ryan McIntosh (Louisville, Ky./Trinity) was 13th with a score of 271.90.
The Wildcats closed day one action with another pool, school and Big Ten record, crushing the field in the 400 medley relay and cracking the 3:07 barrier with an NCAA `A' time of 3:06.99. Grevers, Alexandrov, Bubolz and Barbic were responsible for the domination.
Day two action gets underway at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 17, with preliminary heats.
