'Cats Cruise Past Notre Dame, 172-126

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - First-place finishes in 11 of the 16 events allowed the Northwestern men's swimming and diving team to cruise past host Notre Dame 172-126 Saturday at the Rolf Aquatics Center. The win improves the Wildcats' dual meet record to 4-6 overall, while the Fighting Irish fall to 5-6. Brian Davis (Issaquah, Wash./Issaquah), Kellan O'Connor (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy Preparatory), Tony Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) and Louis Torres (Morton Grove, Ill./Niles West) each won three individual events apiece to lead the Wildcats. Davis finished first in the 1000 freestyle (9:28.25) and 400 individual medley (4:06.39) and O'Connor swept the butterfly events, winning the 100 in a time of 49.34 and the 200 in 1:48.78. Swanson took both backstoke titles, capturing the 100 in a season-best time of 50.09 and the 200 in 1:50.76. Torres continued his success in the breaststroke, winning the 100 in 57.93 and the 200 in 2:06.63. O'Connor and Torres also teamed up with Mark Hamming (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Shelby Clark (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) on the victorious 400 medley relay squad (3:23.02). NU also received first-place finishes from Clark in the 100 free (47.54) and Mike Shue (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) in the 500 free (4:35.85).
The Wildcats return to action at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31 when they travel to Michigan to take on the Wolverines.
