EVANSTON, Ill. -

Northwestern meets Michigan on Thursday in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. NU, the No. 7 seed, has dropped its last two games, while UM, the No. 2 seed, has been unbeaten (5-0-1) in its last six.

Mychal Turpin leads a potent Wolverine attack that has scored 42 goals. Turpin has 10 goals and five assists, Mike White has seven goals and seven assists and Adam Bruh leads the team with 11 assists. UM goalkeeper Peter Dzubay leads a defense that has allowed only 25 goals. Dzubay is 6-1-1 with a 0.87 goals-against average and two shutouts.

Knox Cameron, who also has 10 goals, will not be in the Wolverine lineup. Cameron was selected to represent the United States this weekend in the Under-20 CONCACAF Group B qualifying tournament in Charleston, S.C.

Northwestern brings a tough defense to the tournament, allowing only 1.4 goals per game. Freshman Jaro Pylypczak (Lombard, Ill./Benet Academy) and senior Steve Jedlinski (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) have each been mainstays in the backfield, starting all 19 games. Senior J.D. Martin (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick), a transfer from Rutgers, has seven shutouts, good for second in Big Ten. Northwestern has not lost more than two consecutive games this season.

The winner of the match will move on to the semifinals against the winner of the Ohio State/Michigan State quarterfinal. In other first-round action, Penn State and Wisconsin will play to see which team advances to the semifinal against Indiana, which received a first-round bye.
