EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern begins its "second" season today, participating in the NCAA Central Regional Championships. The Wildcats, who are seeking their second consecutive NCAA National Championships appearance, begin regional play at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., just outside Aurora. Tournament action continues through Saturday. Northern Illinois is hosting this year's Regional Championships.

Led by the senior duo of David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union) and Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman), NU garnered the 13th-seed in a Central Regional field that includes Big Ten foes Michigan State, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Purdue. The 'Cats are ranked No. 36 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin index.

NU is one of 81 teams in the Championships' field. Teams are spread across three 27-team regional tournaments: East, Central and West. All three regionals are scheduled to be played May 17-19.

The top 10 teams and the top two individuals (not on one of those eight teams) from each region will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 30-June 2 at the Gold Course at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va.
