Final 2007 Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge Results
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. -- Northwestern gained ground on the final day of the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge and finished third in the eight-team event, which featured four schools each from the two conferences. The two-day tournament was held at the Chambers Bay golf course, just outside Tacoma on the banks of the Puget Sound. In the conference challenge, the Pac-10 won the league bragging rights by a narrow 30 1/2 to 29 1/2 count. It was the Pac-10's third win in the event's four-year history. UCLA, ranked 11th in the latest golf coaches' poll, won the Challenge by six strokes over Michigan State. The Wildcats, who were coming off a first-place effort in their own Windon Memorial Classic earlier this month, were 12 strokes back of the Bruins. Oregon, Minnesota, Washington State, Oregon State and Wisconsin finished fourth to eighth, respectively. Michigan State's Ryan Brehm captured the individual title by carding a 5-under 67 on Monday to finish 6-under (68-75-67). Northwestern senior Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) led the Wildcats in the final round, firing a 2-under 70 to finish 10th overall with a 6-over 222 (73-79-70). Three Wildcats all finished in 23rd place with an 11-over 227: Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic), Matt Denison (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) and Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson). Dupont had rounds of 76, 74 and 77; Denison 77, 72 and 78; and Bowers 80, 73 and 74. Senior Kyle Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) was a stroke back of NU's middle trio with a 12-over 228 (73-82-73).
Sophomore David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) placed 16th with a 9-over 225 (78-76-71), but was competing as an individual.
Northwestern closes out the fall portion of its schedule Nov. 5-7 at the CordeValle Collegiate in San Martin, Calif. |
