Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge Day One Results
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. -- Northwestern posted rounds of 299 and 298 for a 21-over 597 and sits in a fourth-place tie with Michigan State at the Fourth annual Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge, which is being played at the newly opened Chambers Bay golf course (7,471 yards, par-72) outside Tacoma. Chambers Bay is a links-style course, sitting right on the edge of Puget Sound. It was named the second-best new course in the country by Golfweek. Eleventh-ranked UCLA leads the tournament by seven strokes over another Pac-10 team, Oregon. Minnesota is in third place, 10 strokes back of the Bruins. Eight players are still finishing up their second round, although the teams completed play on Sunday.
The Wildcats, who are coming off a first-place finish at their own Windon Memorial Classic earlier this month, were led by a pair of newcomers on Sunday. Transfer Matt Denison and freshman Josh Dupont are in 15th and 18th place, respectively, with first-day scores of a 5-over 149 (77-72) and a 6-over 150 (76-74). Senior Dan Doyle is in 25th place with an 8-over 152 (73-79) and sophomore Jonathan Bowers is 28th with a 9-over 153 (80-73). Senior Kyle Moore is 37th with an 11-over 155 (73-82). Sophomore David Lipsky is competing as an individual, and he is in 32nd place with a 10-over 154 (78-76).
The final round is set to begin Monday morning, with the Pac-10 holding a slim 21-19 edge after 40 matches that were played Sunday. Regulation scoring will be kept for team and individual tournament standings, while the conference challenge winner will be decided by Monday's match play. The Pac-10 leads the conference challenge series portion of the tournament 2-1 after winning last season's event.
The Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge is the brainchild of Northwestern University, the University of Oregon and KemperSports, a Northbrook, Ill.-based golf management and development company. The trio joined forces in 2004 to create a tournament showcasing the talents of teams and players from both conferences on a rotation of prestigious golf venues. The inaugural event took place in 2004 at the internationally acclaimed Bandon Dunes in Oregon, then moved to The Glen Club, a heralded Tom Fazio design on Chicago's North Shore, in 2005. The Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge headed back to Oregon's southern coast in 2006 for play at the world-renowned Pacific Dunes, the reigning No. 1 on GOLF Magazine's "Top 100 Courses You Can Play."
