GOLF, Ill. - Northwestern's men's golf team ran away from the field in the final round of the Windon Memorial Classic, shooting a 13-under-par 275 for a 25-stroke victory (284-289-275=848) over second-place Duke. Four NU golfers finished in the top 20 with three carding rounds in the 60s.
Leading the birdie barrage for the Wildcats was tournament champion Tom Johnson (Weaverville, Calif./Del Campo). Johnson, who won his first collegiate tournament, shot a tournament-record final-round 66 on his way to a three-round tournament-record total of 206. The previous single-round record of 67 was held by a trio of players, the most recent being former NU All-America Luke Donald in 1999. The former lowest winning individual score of 208 was previously held by Anthony Rodriguez of Texas A. To go along with setting tournament records, Johnson's 66 and three-round total 206 are both career lows.
As a team, NU shattered the lowest winning team score for 54-holes by 20 strokes. Previous record holder, Oklahoma, shot 868 in 2000.
Johnson's teammates gave him all he could handle down the stretch, as seniors Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) and Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden/Flagler College) carded final rounds of 68 and 67. Harrington's 68, a career low, tied him for second as he posted rounds of 71-71-68=210. Widerstedt's 67, also a career low, helped him finish in fourth with rounds of 71-73-67=211.
Stanford's Jim Seki, who was paired with Johnson in the final round, shot a 69 in today's final round, tying him with Harrington. North Florida's John Limanti matched Widerstedt with a 5-under 67, tying him for fourth.
Rounding out the Wildcat contingent was junior T.C. Ford (Covington, La./Covington) who finished in 20th position (71-76-74=221) and sophomore Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland). Dougherty carded a 17-over 233.
The 'Cats are next in action when they travel to Fairfax, Calif., for the Alister MacKenzie Invitational on Oct. 14-15.
