Eric Peterman's 2008 Spring Blog

Throughout Northwestern's spring season, senior wide receiver Eric Peterman (Sherman, Ill./Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin) will share his thoughts on the Wildcat football team. Peterman starred for the 'Cats in 2007, leading the team in receptions (66 catches for 744 yards, 3 TD's) and earning the team's co-MVP honors. He also was named a second-team All-Big Ten selection by Rivals.com.

Check back on this page throughout the month of April for Eric's updates.

Don't you love taking those IQ and standardized tests that tell you how stupid you are? The questions are so easy if you just take your time and think about them. But then there is that time constraint that forces you to get all jittery and mark down that 1 + 1 = 3. Taking the wonderlic test the other day was no different. "If a sack of six apples, four oranges and three bananas costs $5.18 how much would four sacks cost?" The catch is they give you 50 questions and tell you to answer as many as you can, going in order, and not skipping questions, in 12 minutes. It's not simple and in fact can be very frustrating. Fortunately or unfortunately, the NFL also cares about talent and doesn't just base your draft status on your IQ.

Both lacrosse and softball have been victorious so far this weekend. Lacrosse was in a battle last night as Johns Hopkins brought their "A" game. With JHU leading by three goals late in the first half the Wildcats won a draw and Casey Donohoe ripped a shot to score just as the buzzer sounded, slicing the lead to only two. The 'Cats came out on a mission scoring early and often in the second half, leading them to their 35th victory in a row. The softball team manhandled Indiana both yesterday and today, 10-run ruling them in five innings both games. The outstanding play of Lauren Delany, Tammy Williams and Kelly Dyer has this team looking in top-shape again this season as they push for another Women's College World Series trip.

Saturday brought us another chance to scrimmage in beautiful Ryan Field. Finally with great weather and helpful officiating, we were able to get a lot accomplished today. The competition was better than last Saturday in the sense that the offense put up more of a fight today. We are still tweaking and learning some things about our new offense. We didn't want to unveil too much today as we prepare for our Spring game next Saturday April 26th at noon. We again recorded some great film that we can learn from. We moved the ball well as an offense today but stalled once we got near the red zone. Penalties continue to trouble us and halt drives. Watching the film and learning from our mistakes is essential.

Coach Fitz gave us another great parallel earlier this week about how football prepares you for life in dealing with mistakes. Watching film and correcting your mistakes is a great way to improve as a football player, but once you get into the real world mistakes can prove to be very costly. "If you screw up in the working world or in your marriage, your boss will divorce you and wife will fire you!"

We hope to have a great week of preparation and learning from our mistakes, so we have a great go next Saturday. We invite all Wildcat supporters to come out to the Spring Game next Saturday to see us compete and enjoy all of the activities. Make sure you pre-register for the Inaugural "Walk for Randy" next Saturday morning that will kick off the day at Ryan Field at 9 a.m. There also will be lots of activities on Randy Walker Terrace before the game and everybody's favorite, Stretch with the 'Cats at 11:45 a.m. Check out NUsports.com to register for the walk and for a complete list of activities!
