Wildcats Announce 2005 Signing Class
Feb. 2, 2005
2005 Northwestern Football Signing Class EVANSTON, Ill. -- Head coach Randy Walker and the Northwestern University football program announced today the signing of 20 football recruits to National Letters of Intent. Led by three players who were named players-of-the-year in their state and/or region -- linebacker Chris Jeske (Joliet Catholic Academy), the Chicago Sun-Times Illinois Player of the Year; running Tyrell Sutton (Akron Archbishop Hoban HS), Ohio's "Mr. Football;" and defensive back Brendan Smith (New Hampton School), New Hampshire's 2004 Gatorade Player of the Year and the 2004 New England Prep School Class A Player of the Year -- Northwestern has filled a number of needs with a balanced, talented class. "This might be one of the most talented classes Northwestern has ever recruited," said Walker. "We'll know a little more about this group in two or three years, however. As impressive as their credentials and honors are on paper, I'm even more excited and impressed about this group's character. "Once again, our coaching staff and players deserve a great deal of credit for attracting this class. Our players represent our institution so well and they really help us make sure we find student-athletes who are a good fit for Northwestern." Five of Northwestern's 20 recruits hail from the state of Illinois, with four coming from the greater Chicagoland area. In all, 12 states are represented in this recruiting class, reflecting Northwestern's mission to enroll a diverse and national undergraduate class. "We focused on recruiting linemen this year, as well as some of the skill positions--especially linebacker, running back and quarterback," said Walker. "We are going to lose some quality players in those areas the next couple years and need to groom some of our younger talent this year." This year's class is once again balanced with offensive and defensive players -- 11 on offense and nine on defense. "Overall, Northwestern definitely filled some needs," said Tim O'Halloran, a recruiting analyst for Rivals.com. "I would call this class a success for Randy Walker. The Wildcats' big thing coming into this year was linemen and they certainly got four or five quality kids." Northwestern is coming off back-to-back six-win seasons, as well as a fourth-place finish (5-3) in the Big Ten in 2004.
