Northwestern Falls on the Road at No. 8 Ohio State
Sept. 22, 2007
COLUMBUS, Ohio - No. 8 Ohio State scored on its first three offensive possessions and never looked back as the Northwestern Wildcats fell 58-7 to the Buckeyes Saturday afternoon before 105,178 fans at Ohio Stadium. The loss drops NU to 2-2 and 0-1 in the Big Ten while Ohio State improves to 4-0 and 1-0. The Buckeyes wasted no time getting on the board as Todd Boeckman hit Brian Robiskie on a 42-yard touchdown pass down the right sideline on the third play of the game. That same combo made it 14-0 on OSU's next possession as Boeckman found Robiskie again, this time down the left sideline for a 28-yard score. After a Maurice Wells 3-yard run and a Vernon Gholston fumble return for a touchdown, Boeckman hooked up with Robiskie a third time for a 19-yard score. A 36-yard run by Maurice Wells and a 40-yard field goal by Ryan Pretorius extended OSU's lead to 45-0 at half. The Wildcats' lone score came on the opening kickoff of the second half when redshirt freshman Stephen Simmons turned his first career kickoff return into a 99-yard touchdown. Simmons broke free up the middle, avoided two would-be tacklers and sprinted down the right sideline for the score. It was the second-longest return in school history and the first kickoff return for a score since 2004. Northwestern moved the ball much better in the second half, as C.J. Bacher went 9-of-14 for 90 yards after halftime. Wide receiver Eric Peterman had a solid afternoon with a career-high six catches for 61 yards, including a 28-yard catch in the third quarter. Rasheed Ward caught three balls for 15 yards and Kim Thompson had two for 22 yards. Running back Omar Conteh, filling in for the injured Tyrell Sutton, had 15 carries for 28 yards.
On the defensive side, Columbus native Adam Kadela recorded a game- and career-high 13 tackles, including two for loss. John Gill had six tackles, two for loss, including one sack. Boeckman was 11-of-14 for 179 yards, four scores and one interception by Sherrick McManis. Chris Wells carried 12 times for 100 yards and one score while Maurice Wells ran 15 times for 44 yards and two touchdowns. Northwestern returns home to Evanston next week against Michigan. Game time is 11 a.m. CT. |
