Coble's Putback Lifts Wildcats Over North Florida

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) -- Freshman Kevin Coble's jumper with 3.2 seconds left gave Northwestern a 40-39 win over North Florida Saturday at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Northwestern turned up the heat when it had to the most, outscoring the Ospreys 9-1 over the final six minutes to come away with the win. The Wildcats held North Florida to just two field goals in the final 8:28. "I told our guys that every game we're going play will be close," NU coach Carmody said. "So let's get good at being in close games. Let's get good at the end of game situations because we're going to be in them. We're not capable of blowing people out. Things have to go extremely well for us. The other night against Brown, we played very well, shot the ball well, passed the ball well, but you're not going to see too many of those." Coble was near the basket when Craig Moore went up for a three point shot from the left side. The shot tipped the rim and Coble was waiting for it. He grabbed the rebound, and shot the ball in from the right side. Coble finished the night with six points and six rebounds. Tim Doyle led all Northwestern (3-2) scorers with eight points. Chris Timberlake and Aaron Caruthers led the Ospreys (1-5) with a game high 10 points apiece, and Gallo Cham had a game high 10 rebounds as the Ospreys outrebounded Northwestern 40-34. Jeff Ryan had yet another solid game off the bench with seven points and three boards. Jeremy Nash also played well off the bench in the final minutes and tied the game at 38-38 with his baseline jumper with 3:30 to play. Moore had six points and eight assists while Jason Okrzesik had five off the bench
After a free throw shot by Caruthers gave UNF the 39-38 lead, NU called a timeout that set up the missed 3-pointer and game-winning tip-in by Coble. It was the lowest scoring game for the Wildcats since they beat Purdue on the road on February 11, 2004 by the same score. |
