EVANSTON, Ill. - Freshman J.A. Happ (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) was named to the 2002 Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American team for his performance during the 2002 season. Happ received honorable mention honors as a reliever. The All-America honor follows a first-team All-Big Ten selection and a second-team Mideast Region appointment. Happ is the first to receive the award since Ryan Bos was named in 1999.

Happ concluded his freshman campaign pitching in 21 games with three starts and ending the year with the team's best ERA at 2.10 in 51.1 innings. Happ pitched in 11 regular-season Big Ten games earning three saves and compiling a 3-1 record. He also held opposing hitters to a .217 league batting average and .208 overall.
