Box Score

EVANSTON, Ill. - Ohio State scored five runs in the fourth and three more in the seventh to win game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Rocky Miller Park. The split drops Northwestern to 23-25 overall, 11-16 in the Big Ten. NU won the first game 9-6. Mark Ori and Anthony Wycklendt each recorded sacrifice flies in the 10-2 loss.

Like they did in Friday's game, Ohio State scored in the first inning. This time, however, they only score one, not six. A leadoff double stole second and went to third on a single. The runner crossed the plate on an RBI ground out.

Northwestern responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the first. Leadoff man Pat McMahon (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel) was issued a walk and moved to third on two straight singles. Left fielder Anthony Wycklendt (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) hit a sacrifice fly to center field that tied the game.

NU took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third, as the offense manufactured the go-ahead run. Center fielder Aaron Newman (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) led off the inning with a single to right and quickly stole second. After McMahon moved Newman to third on a groundball to the right side, Mark Ori (Niles, Ill./Maine South) hit a sacrifice fly to center.

OSU blew the game open in the top of the fourth. The Buckeyes scored five runs on three hits and two Wildcat walks. The Buckeyes chased starter Julio Siberio (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) in the inning, and with one out gave way to senior Chris Hayes (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest).

Hayes went one and two-third innings and gave up one run on two hits.

OSU scored three runs in the seventh inning to extend their lead to 10-2.

Sophomore Dan Schwartz (New York, N.Y./Northern Valley Regional) and senior Chris Davidson (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley) pitched the final two innings.

That's how the game would end.

Designated hitter Pat McMahon (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel) extended his hitting streak to 14 games with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. He laced a fastball down the left field line to end the game 1-for-3 with a walk. McMahon has hit safely in 31 of NU's last 32 games. He has enjoyed hitting streaks of 17 games and his current 14 games.

McMahon needs just four hits to tie the single-season hits mark of 81. He currently has 77 hits in 183 at-bats for a Big Ten best .421 batting average. He also has 17 doubles, three shy of the NU single-season doubles mark of 20.

NU and Ohio State wrap up the four-game series tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. The two teams will play a single nine-inning game.
