Each year more than 45 Northwestern athletes, representing all sports, are bestowed a prestigious endowed scholarship, thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends of the Wildcats. These donors and recipients meet for the annual Endowed Athletic Scholarship Luncheon, which takes place at the N Club in McGaw Hall in the spring.
Harold and Virginia Anderson Scholarship
Established in 1990 in memory of Harold and Virginia Anderson honoring their devoted support of Northwestern Athletics, this scholarship is presented to one male and one female student-athlete who excel in both academics and athletics.
Harry D. Brookby Athletic Scholarship
Established in 1986 by Mr. Brookby, this scholarship is presented to an outstanding student-athlete in baseball, to encourage the pursuit of excellence in athletic and athletic performance.
Willard J. and Evelyn G. Buntain Family Football Scholarship
Established in 2001 by Judith Buntain in memory of her parents, this scholarship is awarded to a football student-athlete who embodies the same spirit of dedication, loyalty and commitment to Northwestern as her parents exhibited throughout their lifetimes.
Ronald J. and Elizabeth D. Chinnock Scholarship
Established in 1994 by Ronald and Elizabeth Chinnock, the scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving female student-athlete who embodies the spirit of Northwestern University athletics. The recipient will exhibit leadership, integrity, and a desire to succeed that is reflected both on the field and in the classroom.
Vandy Christie Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1994 by friends of Vandy Christie, the scholarship is presented to a letter winner who possesses boundless energy, enthusiasm and loyalty demonstrated by Vandy as an athlete, coach and administrator at Northwestern University.
Richard and Jane Dean Scholarship
In recognition of the opportunities and friendships on and off the field made available to the Dean family, the Deans recognize a scholar-football player who maintains high standards of classroom performance while also being an unselfish contributor to his team, displaying the highest standards of personal commitment to team success and sportsmanship.
Ross and Elizabeth Dean Football Scholarship
Established in 2000, this scholarship is presented annually to a deserving student-athlete in football who maintains the highest athletic and academic standards representative of Northwestern University.
Bruce and Betty De Swarte Scholarship
Established in 1986 by Bruce De Swarte, this scholarship is presented to an outstanding student-athlete in football who demonstrates leadership on the field and in the classroom.
Waldo Fisher Memorial Scholarship
The Waldo Fisher Scholarship honors a man who dedicated 50 years to Northwestern University as an athlete, coach, professor and administrator. In 1981, friends of Waldo Fisher, spearheaded by Ron Chinnock and Carlyle Anderson, established a scholarship to recognize his attributes which included high standards for personal conduct, athletic competition, academic achievement, discipline, competitiveness, determination, being a "team player," loyalty, sincerity, dedication and honesty. This scholarship is awarded annually to one male and one female student-athlete.
Edwin C. Gage Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1986 by Edwin C. Gage III, this scholarship is presented to a male tennis player in honor of his father's interest in college tennis.
Charles "Doc" Glass and Helen Glass Scholarship
Established in 1992 by friends and former student-athletes who enjoyed the hospitality, counseling and love of Doc and Helen Glass over the years, this scholarship pays special tribute to the distinctive contributions that Doc and Helen made to Northwestern and provides for a new generation of student-athletes to attend the University they cared about so deeply. The scholarship is presented to a student-athlete who demonstrates strong academic performance and a commitment to Northwestern and its education.
John H. Glenn Memorial Scholarship
Mrs. Thomas Hoehn established this scholarship in 1987 in memory of her cousin, John Glenn, who was manager of the men's basketball team in 1935 and 1936. It is presented to an outstanding student-athlete on the men's basketball team.
Stanley E. and Louise G. Hathaway Scholarship
Established in 1959 by Mr. and Mrs. Hathaway, the scholarship is presented to a junior or senior athlete who demonstrates exceptional scholastic and athletic ability.
Jennie Stoker Helwig Scholarship
Established in 1992 by Mildred White in honor of her sister, Jennie, this scholarship is awarded to a women's tennis player who demonstrates outstanding academic and athletic performance.
Thomas J. Hoehn Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1985 by Mrs. Hoehn, this scholarship is presented to an outstanding student-athlete who is a member of the men's tennis team to encourage the pursuit of excellence in athletic and academic performance at the undergraduate level.
Thomas J. and Dorothy Somers Hoehn Athletic Scholarship
Established in 1988, this award is presented to one male and one female student-athlete who demonstrate superior academic performance while participating as athletes at Northwestern.
Dr. Robert W. Johnson Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1985 by Doris Bennett Johnson, this scholarship is presented to an outstanding football student-athlete in memory of Dr. Robert Johnson, All-America tackle and recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honor in football in 1926. Dr. Johnson was inducted into the Northwestern Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997.
Ronald E. Kiper Memorial Scholarship
In memory of her husband, Sally Kiper established this scholarship in 1990. It is presented to a member of the men's tennis team who has demonstrated outstanding dedication and enthusiasm.
The Koldyke Family Scholarship
Established in 1991 by the Koldyke family, this scholarship is presented to a baseball player who excels in both academics and athletics.
The Sophia and Konstandino Loukas Endowed Scholarship
The Sophia and Konstandino Loukas Scholarship was established in 2004 by Angelo Loukas to honor the memory of his parents and the love, courage and tenacity exemplified by his mother (Sophia) and his father Konstandino who left their homeland to bring their young family to the land of opportunity and hope. The Scholarship is awarded to a football player bold enough to pursue and live his dream.
Shirley Louise Malloy Memorial Scholarship
In memory of Shirley Louise Malloy, this scholarship was established in 1990 and is presented to a student-athlete who has demonstrated strong academic and athletic performance.
Gene G. and Merrill H. Mundy Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1986 by two former student-athletes at Northwestern, Merrill (basketball, 1930) and Gene (football, 1942) to recognize their strong belief in athletics and scholarship. It is awarded to a student-athlete who demonstrates significant leadership as a scholar, athlete, and campus citizen and who will make an impact on his or her chosen field after leaving NU.
The Nelson R. Nedde Memorial Scholarship
Established in 2004 by Norman R. Nedde and family in memory of his twin brother Nelson, this scholarship is presented to a member of the baseball team with preference given to a student in the School of Education and Social Policy. The student-athlete should demonstrate excellence in the classroom as well as the playing field.
The Robert and Dorothy Osborn Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2002, the Robert and Dorothy Osborn Endowed Scholarship is awarded annually to a member of the men's basketball team who represents the highest standard of excellence both on and off the basketball court.
Carleton H. and Bradford H. Pendleton Memorial Scholarship
Mrs. Carleton Pendleton established this scholarship in 1964 and is presented to a male varsity student-athlete in memory of both her husband's and son's dedication to the ideals of Northwestern and to encourage the athlete's love of sports and recreation. The honoree should be of good character, above average scholarship and involved in other campus activities.
James J. Progar Athletic Scholarship
This award was established by Rosemary Progar in 1988 in memory of her husband's contribution to Northwestern athletics during his 24-year career in the equipment room including being manager from 1968-75. "Progie," as he was called, loved Northwestern and the student-athletes, taking an active interest in their lives both on and off the field. This award honors student-athletes who excel as scholars, citizens and team leaders.
James and Mary Jo Rausch Family Scholarship
In support of the men's swimming program, this scholarship was established in 1999. It is awarded to a senior who has brought honor and distinction to Northwestern University through his leadership, ability and hard work.
Robert K. Rauth Scholarship
Established in 1995 in memory of his mother, Helen Banach Rauth, and his coach, Fred Lindstrom, for their support, belief, and encouragement in his education at Northwestern, this scholarship is presented to a member of the baseball team who demonstrates a desire to succeed on and off the field.
Steve and Audrey Sawle Scholarship
Established in honor of Steve's teammates, coaches and personnel from Northwestern's 1949 Rose Bowl Championship team, this scholarship is awarded to a male or female student-athlete pursuing scholarship and athletic excellence.
Paul and Margaret Schutt Scholarship
This award, established in 1995, is presented to a male or a female swimmer who displays not only athletic prowess but academic achievement as well.
Walter K. Smart Scholarship
This award was established in 1955 by his daughter Mary Elizabeth Smart Byrne and awarded to a junior or senior student-athlete to recognize the devoted interest in intercollegiate athletics by Dr. Smart, English professor and member of the faculty committee on athletics for many years. The honoree should demonstrate good scholarship, ability and be outstanding in sportsmanship.The honoree should show loyalty to friends, team and university.
Marie Mikkelsen Stoker Swimming Scholarship
Mildred Stoker White established this scholarship in 1988 in memory of her mother, Marie Mikkelson Stoker. This scholarship is presented annually to one male and one female swimmer, each of whom demonstrates academic and athletic superiority.
Bruce Thompson Wrestling Scholarship
Established in 1994 by Bruce Thompson, this scholarship is presented to a member of the wrestling team who demonstrates a competitive spirit in wrestling and in academics.
The Torch of Center Court Scholarship
Center Court, the support group for women's athletics at Northwestern, established the Torch of Center Court Scholarship. It is presented annually to a returning senior or fifth-year senior student-athlete who demonstrates excellence in leadership, motivation, and commitment to her sport, showing dedication to the university as evidenced by her continuous effort.
Joseph H. Trienens Swimming Scholarship
This scholarship is presented to a member of the men's or women's swimming team who demonstrates excellence as a swimmer and a scholar. It was established in 1992 by Mr. Howard Trienens, former chairman of the Northwestern University Board of Trustees.
Bob and Charlotte Voigts Recognition Scholarship
Friends of Bob and Charlotte Voigts established this scholarship in 1990 to honor their over 50 years of loyalty and service to Northwestern. Bob (class of 1939) was an All-America tackle in 1938, a head football coach from 1947-54 and the coach of the 1949 Rose Bowl Championship team. Charlotte (class of 1942) was a university administrator and associate director of alumni relations. This scholarship is presented to a junior or senior student-athlete who demonstrates outstanding academic and athletic performance.
Sidney Warshauer and Joseph Stein Athletic Scholarship
Established by their sons, Myron C. Warshauer and Richard A. Stein to honor their fathers, this scholarship is presented to a student-athlete who exemplifies their keen sense of competition and fairness. The honoree should demonstrate excellence in his or her academic and athletic performance.
Mr. and Mrs. Roger LeMoyne White Basketball Scholarship
Established in 1973 by Mildred White, the award is presented annually to one male and one female student-athlete in honor of the White's keen interest in and support of Northwestern varsity athletics.
Mildred White Endowed Football Scholarship
Established in 2003, this scholarship is awarded to a football player who shares the same loyalty to and enthusiasm for Northwestern Football that Mildred exhibited during her nearly 50-year association with Northwestern University.
Trent Whitney Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2004 in honor of their son by Erwin and DeLoris Whitney, this scholarship is awarded to a student-athlete enrolled in the Medill School of Journalism, the School of Communication or the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. The recipient shall be an undergraduate sophomore, junior or senior with a "B" grade average or above.
Alfred S. Wiltberger Memorial Scholarship
This is the first athletic scholarship to be established at Northwestern. In 1952, Marjorie Wiltberger wished to recognize her husband's many contributions to the University as a loyal alumnus. The scholarship is presented to a student-athlete with definite athletic ability and satisfactory scholastic ability.
